Carson City Board of Supervisors to discuss additional changes to school zones
At the upcoming Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting this Thursday, June 3, the board will discuss and possibly act on a proposed resolution to designate highways or portions of highways as school zones, along with additional changes to existing school zones now.
In 1992, the board established certain school zones within Carson City and also specified that the board may designate school zones by resolution. On June 4, 2020, the board adopted a resolution to re-design school zones to improve the safety of traffic circulation at and around certain schools throughout Carson City, according to the agenda.
Prior to 2020, the school zones had not been reviewed since their installation in 1992. According to staff, since 1992, travel behavior around Carson City schools has changed, one school has closed, and best practices for establishment of school zones has evolved.
The RTC is recommending that the board approve changes to school zone designations at Pioneer High School, Carson Middle School, Eagle Valley Middle School, and Fritsch Elementary School.
— The changes to the Pioneer High School school zone would result in:
East Park Street from North Carson Street east to North Stewart Street. Corbett Street from North Carson Street east to its terminus at the school parking lot. North Fall Street from East Adams Street south to East John Street. North Peters Street from East Adams Street south to East Park Street.
— The changes to the Carson Middle School school zone would result in:
West King Street from South Iris Street west to North Ormsby Boulevard. North Ormsby Boulevard from West King Street north to Calaveras Drive. North Richmond Avenue from West King Street north to West Robinson Street. West Telegraph Street from North Richmond Avenue east to North Iris Street. West Musser Street from North Richmond Avenue east to Mountain Street. Mountain Street from West King Street north to West Musser Street.
— The changes to the Eagle Valley Middle School school zone would result in:
East 5th Street from Hells Bells Road east to Riparian Way. Parkhill Drive from Hells Bells Road south to East 5th Street. Hells Bells Road from Parkhill Drive south to East 5th Street. Hidden Meadow Drive east to Buzzy’s Ranch Road.
— The changes to the Fritsch Elementary School school zone would result in:
North Division Street from West Winnie Lane south to Bath Street. Bath Street from Pyrenees Street east to North Curry Street. Mountain Street from West Winnie Lane south to West Long Street. West Winnie Lane from North Division Street west to Mountain Street.
Each would result in a reduction in school zone areas, as seen in the proposed maps found here.
