NV Energy electric and gas customers in Northern Nevada may see hikes of an average of $9.84 per month in electric and $4.75 a month in natural gas coming soon.

The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada has scheduled three consumer sessions in June to hear public comment regarding NV Energy’s general rate applications to adjust electricity and natural gas rates in Northern Nevada.

In its applications, NV Energy proposes to increase annual revenues by $105.9 million, according to a PUCN news release.

For electric service, NV Energy requests approval to increase its annual revenues by $94.8 million and proposes to recover the increased revenues through a revised rate design that, for single-family residential customers, would increase the Basic Service Charge by $27.90 (from $16.50 to $44.40) and decrease the volumetric per-kilowatt-hour rate to collect approximately $18.06 less per month from a typical single-family residential customer using 759 kilowatt-hours of electricity per month, according to the release.

Thus, for the typical residential customer’s bill, the estimated net total impact of SPPC’s proposal related to electric service is an increase of approximately $9.84 per month, the news release states.

For gas service, NV Energy requests approval to increase its annual revenues by $11.1 million and proposes to recover the increased revenues through a revised rate design that, for single-family residential customers, would increase the Basic Service Charge by $4 (from $14.00 to $18) and increase the volumetric per-therm rate to collect approximately $0.75 more per month from a typical residential customer using an average of 57 therms per month, according to the news release.

Thus, for the typical residential customer’s bill, the estimated net total impact of SPPC’s proposal is an increase of approximately $4.75 per month, the news release states.

New electric and natural gas rates would become effective Oct. 1, 2024.

Docket No. 24-02026 (electric operations) and Docket No. 24-02027 (natural gas operations) have been consolidated for hearing purposes. The PUCN may approve rates as proposed or decrease or increase rates as necessary to ensure rates are just and reasonable.

Written comments also may be submitted to the PUCN electronically through the Electronic Filing System on the PUCN’s website, by hand-delivery, or via U.S. Mail.

Consumer sessions are scheduled as follows:

The BCP’s role is to advocate for reliable utility service at the lowest reasonable cost for those consumers. PUCN Regulatory Operations Staff and NV Energy representatives will also attend. Public comment may be limited to five minutes per speaker.

Hearings on these applications are scheduled to begin Wednesday, June 26, at 9 a.m. Information about the applications can be found on the PUCN’s website at puc.nv.gov.
