Inmate dies in stabbing attack at Northern Nevada Correctional Center in Carson City
A Northern Nevada Correctional center inmate was killed Tuesday in an attack by another inmate who allegedly used a homemade weapon in the Carson City facility homicide, prison officials said.
The incident was reported at 3:32 p.m. An inmate reportedly doing a life sentence for first degree murder, allegedly attacked another inmate using a prison made weapon, said NDOC spokeswoman Brooke Santina. The victim, inmate Thayer Joseph Burton, was attacked and stabbed in a hallway area of the housing unit.
According to NDOC, Burton began to run toward staff. The officer in the housing unit responded toward the inmate and immediately called for assistance. Multiple correctional officers and medical staff responded and attempted life saving measures.
The Carson City Sheriff's Office and Fire Department were called to the scene and a Care Flight air ambulance was ordered. Burton, however, died of the injuries at around 4 p.m.
Burton was committed to the Carson City detention center from Clark County Sept. 14, 2009. He was sentenced to life for assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit a violent crime, robbery, first degree murder and use of a deadly weapon enhancement. Next of kin have been notified and an autopsy will be scheduled.
Investigators have identified the suspect. The investigation is ongoing and more information will be released as it becomes available.
