Carson City's Whistle Stop Inn demolished to make room for FISH revitalization program
Last month FISH offered the vacant buildings to Carson City Sheriff’s Office and Fire Department for a training purposes. On Tuesday morning the motel was being demolished.
The new buildings that will replace the old motel will help revitalize the Carson City landscape, revitalize the local workforce, and local families who have been impacted with poverty, according to FISH.
The apartments will provide low-cost and no-cost transitional housing (similar to traditional college housing/scholarships) for families with the work experience, skills, and aptitude to successfully take on technical training classes, helping them move from “minimum wage to meaningful careers.”
FISH is providing training to the local labor force so they can fill higher-paying open positions in the area, according to FISH.
This career training includes, but is not limited to: Healthcare, Construction Management, IT (Information Technology), Advanced Manufacturing, Journeymen Electrician, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning), and CDL Truck Driving. The program will provide education resulting in technical certifications and not 4-year degrees.
On Saturday, May 21, FISH will be holding its “Celebrity Waiter” fundraiser that will begin with a formal ground-breaking ceremony on the former Whistle Stop property. FISH invites the community to join them at the fundraiser. For more information see the website and Facebook.
