Carson City deputies arrest man for arson after setting bush on fire near Lompa intersection
A 45-year-old transient man was arrested for felony arson after allegedly starting a brush fire.
On Thursday, deputies were dispatched to an open field at the intersection of N. Lompa and Menlo Dr. on report of an active brush fire with what appeared to be a homeless man who had started it, according to the arrest report.
On arrival, deputies observed the fire and when they exited their patrol vehicle, they observed the man, later identified as Paul Sumner, begin to attempt to put the fire out.
As deputies got closer, the man had put out most of the fire, but the area was still smoldering. Deputies told the man to step away from the fire, at which point he threw his backpack towards deputies and walked towards them.
Deputies placed the man in handcuffs and transported him to the Carson City Jail.
Deputies asked how the fire started, and he “mumbled, but stated he thought it was open space and rambled with incoherent statements,” according to the report. He then stated he used a lighter to set some papers on fire to get it started.
The man stated he “only thought it was unlawful conduct, and was not considered arson.”

According to the report, at around 6:30 a.m. deputies were dispatched to a threats report at the intersection of Curry and Telegraph.
