Carson baseball recap: Senators' playoff chances on the line with 5-3 loss to Damonte Ranch
With five games remaining in the regular season, the Carson High Senators returned home Thursday to Ron McNutt field in Carson City to face the Mustangs of Damonte Ranch.
Starting pitchers Derek Schafer (Carson) and Andrew Herschbach (Damonte Ranch) took the mound hoping to steer the outcome of the game in their favor.
The Mustangs got out to an early lead during the first inning, as an errant throw from a stolen base scored the runner from third giving them a 1-0 lead. Jerry Thomas added a sacrifice fly to cap off a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the first inning.
Herschbach kept the scoreboard in the Mustangs' grasp during the first two innings keeping the game 2-0 heading into the 3rd inning.
Both teams split 1 run apiece in the third, as an errant throw by Carson added another run for the Mustangs, and a walk with the bases loaded by Herschbach that kept the deficit at 2 runs, 3-1 to conclude the third inning.
After Schafer kept the game up for grabs for Carson, the Mustangs tacked on yet another run in the 5th inning, as an RBI single from Tommie Oskam gave them a comfortable lead with 2 innings left to play.
Damonte Ranch's 3 run lead was soon erased in the 6th inning, as Carson answered with a 3-run inning of their own. Highlighted by RBI's from Jared Barnard and Luke Myers that erupted the Senator crowd leaving the score 4-3 in the Mustangs' favor.
An RBI double by Tyler Hopper gave Damonte Ranch a much needed run in the 7th inning, as Carson couldn't answer in the 5-3 loss to Damonte Ranch.
For the Mustangs, Andrew Herschbach pitched a full 4 innings giving up 5 hits and 3 walks with 1 earned run. Tyler Hopper, Tommie Oskam, and Jerry Thomas each had RBI's.
For the Senators, Bryce Moyle and Landon Truesdale went 2 for 3 with 2 singles, Jace Keema and Abel Carter each had 1 hit. Luke Myers went 2 for 2 with 2 and an added RBI. Jared Barnard also added an RBI double.
This loss put Carson's playoff hopes in a state of jeopardy. With just one home game remaining in the regular season, expect Carson to make a combined team effort with their season on the line.
