Muscle Powered Hike: Last Saturday to Genoa Canyon Trail
Join us for a beautiful seven-mile hike, with five water crossings and stunning views, on the Genoa Canyon Trail in Carson Valley. We will hike on part of the Genoa Trail System built by Carson Valley Trails Association, a hiking gem in Carson Valley.
We will meet to organize vehicles at the Genoa Canyon Trailhead at the end of Carson Street in Genoa at 8 a.m. We will leave half of the vehicles at the Genoa Canyon Trailhead, and then carpool with the other half of the cars to Snowshoe Lane. We will then begin our one-way hike back to the Genoa Canyon Trailhead on Carson Street.
The hike begins with a 1300 ft elevation gain and ends with a 1300 ft elevation drop. The highest elevation on the trail is 6140 ft., and is where we will have lunch and enjoy the views. The trail’s first two miles includes uphill switchbacks, then continues 3 miles south across the face of the mountains, and finally back down two miles of steep switchbacks, including a fascinating ridge, to Carson Street in Genoa.
This hike is for experienced, fit hikers who aren't afraid of heights. Hiking poles are highly recommended and we require at least 2 quarts of water, sturdy hiking shoes, and snacks. Hats and sunscreen are also highly recommended. Please, no sneakers due to water crossings. Dogs are not allowed on this hike.
After the hike, those interested can stop for refreshments at the oldest saloon in Nevada, and at the Genoa Country Store; both of which are just three blocks from the Genoa Canyon Trailhead. Please plan to spend approximately five hours for the hike, plus extra time if staying for refreshments. We will cancel if it rains or snows on the morning of the hike.
