Senator Square: Carson High School yearbook is ready for delivery

Editor’s Note: Allison Gill is both a Carson High School senior and the senior editor of this year’s Carneta yearbook. A photography student, Gill made many sacrifices to ensure this book was finished on time, but she would do it all over again because of the thrill of it. She plans on majoring in English at Portland State University.

The idea of creating a yearbook for the 2020-2021 school year was exhausting to say the least. COVID-19 changed everything.

While we were not sure exactly what direction we wanted to take, we knew it had to be focused on the people of Carson High, including the students who make it the welcoming environment it is and the teachers who spend countless hours writing lesson plans through some of the most trying times in their own lives.

Even the administration tried to find ways to make school fun when for students just getting out of bed turned into a daunting task. The theme, Senators Uncovered, was perfect, and the evolution of it was almost effortless because this book was more of a collaborative effort by the yearbook staff than any other produced under the Carneta name. Some students spent countless hours taking photos, and others took every second out of their day to make each page look just right before sending it off to the advisers for review. This is a historical year, and the yearbook itself is one which is truly unforgettable.

Also, for seniors only, a Covid-19 yearbook bundle is being offered. Missed buying a Carneta yearbook last year, the year before last, or the year before the year before last? Because of overruns, CHS has some past Carnetas for sale at an incredible price. Seniors may purchase all four years for only $200 when they go to the CHS Student Finance office to purchase the bundle. CHS adviser Cynthia Mills and CHS Administrators are working out the best ways possible to get the books delivered to students.

Remember, the price per yearbook is $95, so take advantage of this rare opportunity. This sale is available through the end of May. Ordering a yearbook online has YouTube directions too. CHS adviser Cynthia Mills and Alyssa Smith-Ackerley have been receiving numbers of emails and questions about how students and parents may order yearbooks, so they made a very quick how-to video. FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA PUBLIC SPEAKING WINNERS
Four CHS Senior students, Abby Golik, Heba Syeddah, Serena Dantzler, and Walker MacKenzie, have qualified all four years for the National FBLA competition during their high school careers, and the following CHS students placed in the following events for SBLC 2021.

The Public Speaking competition requires FBLA members to address one of the nine goals of FBLA, and the competitors must write and video a four to five-minute-speech incorporating one of the nine goals. The CHS FBLA chapter competed this month in business competitions at the annual State Business Leadership Conference. The conference is normally held in person in either Las Vegas or Reno, but due to Covid19, the conference was held virtually.

Twelve CHS FBLA students competed this year in the state competition. ADVANCEMENT VIA INDVIDUAL DETERMINATION TOUR OF UNR CAMPUS
April 19 allowed 16 students from the AVID II/III class to attend a tour of UNR. Students were given the opportunity to visit the campus, learn about the history of the university, and learn about campus life. The tour gave them information about studying different programs, languages, and studying abroad. CHS Junior, Grace Knoll, was excited by the prospect of possibly studying in Italy, especially when she learned her financial aid and scholarships at UNR would be applied to that program. Overall, it was a great day and the students learned a great deal. —Contributed by CHS Language Arts Teacher Lynette I. SAFE SCHOOL PROFESSIONALS ASKS EVERYONE TO TALK TO TWO
The School Social Workers latest campaign is the My Healthy Coping Skill, the second campaign for April, with the idea that with finals coming up in May, or graduation for seniors, students and staff could share how they manage stress in a healthy way.

With the posts through Padlet, and the hand-made posters students and staff share with SSPs, we will take those at the end of April on the 30th and have them ready to put up around CHS. In doing so, students and staff will be able to look at them throughout May and learn new strategies of how to manage their stress that they may not have considered, previously. Furthermore, this campaign shows us that we all struggle and deal with stress, regardless of age. We can learn from one another and by visually seeing the posters/posters up in the school, I believe they'll reach a lot of people.

APPRECIATION DAY
Senator Pride invited teachers to recognize the hard work and dedication of their coworkers by signing an appreciation banner, making a card in the library, and taking a walk to check out the artwork in the hallways. It is the time of year where every morning gets a little bit tougher, so teachers are kicking off the countdown by appreciating one another.

April 19 had a few excellent ways to connect and remind each other the drive here is 100 percent worth it. The appreciation wall is by the counseling office, and the challenge to teachers is to share something they appreciate about a fellow teacher on it today. There are many tremendous teachers in this building who definitely deserve a shout out! ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
CHS Athletic Department’s Athlete of the Week is Kedre Luschar for Varsity Girls Softball. These athletes and all students who participate in school functions through leadership, clubs, and sports deserve a high level of recognition and congratulations.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK
CHS Freshman Seminar and Health teacher Erin Been has nominated freshman Mikey Hoffer as the Student of the Week. Been said, “I would like to nominate Mikey Hoffer for student of the week; he is a freshman at CHS in leadership class and has proven to be an outstanding student.” Been added about Mikey, “He is kind, helpful, courteous, generous, and continually rises to the occasion meeting or exceeding my expectations as a teacher.” Been also suggests the Carson City community view the following video he made for her class about the benefits of volunteering: https://www.wevideo.com/view/1975558163. Congratulations to Mikey Hoffer on positively drawing the attention of his teacher so much so she would take the time to nominate him as a Student of the Week out of 2400 other students. SENIOR IN THE SPOTLIGHT
CHS is proud to recognize Matteas Klatt as this week’s Senior in the Spotlight. Matteas is an exceptional student with a 5.27 GPA, who will have successfully completed 11 AP classes and numerous Honors classes when he graduates. He is on track to receive the AP Capstone Diploma as well as the Presidential award for his outstanding academic and testing performance. Matteas is one of three CHS students named as a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, an honor earned by less than 2 percent of high school seniors.

In addition to exceling academically, Matteas’ cheerful nature and genuine personality are assets which will serve him well in the future. Although Matteas is dedicated to his academics, he still makes time to participate in numerous extracurricular activities. He has devoted many years to the Carson City Tigersharks as well as the CHS Swim Team.

His leadership in the pool translates to leadership in the classroom as he is a natural role model for other students. Matteas has also been a member of the CHS National Honor Society, Blue Crew, and recently joined the Mountain Bike Team. Matteas will be attending Texas A&M University in the fall and would like to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry with a minor in German. CHS is very proud of the contributions Matteas has made to the school and community and knows he will be successful in all he pursues.
