Prescription drug disposal roundups happening Saturday in Carson City, Douglas and Lyon counties
As part of a nationwide effort to dispose of unused and expired prescription medication, a series of drug round-ups will be happening this Saturday in Carson City, Lyon and Douglas counties.
In efforts to grow a healthy community, Partnership Carson City is conducting its annual drug round-up to raise awareness around the impacts of keeping unused and expired prescription drugs in households by offering a collection day, this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The prescription drug round-up takes place at four Carson City locations:
— Save Mart Supermarkets, located at 3620 N. Carson and 4348 S. Carson streets
— Smith’s Food & Drug Store at 559 E. William St.
— FoodMaxx at 3325 Highway 50 East
— In Douglas County, prescription drugs can be taken Saturday to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, 1038 Buckeye Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to Partnership Douglas County. Residents can pick up free at-home disposal kits from the Partnership Douglas County office, 1625 Hwy 88, Suite 104, Minden. Partnership will also mail them to those who don’t have transportation. Call (775) 782-8611 or email info@pdcnv.org.
In Lyon County, Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties will host its annual drug round-up Saturday. Free at-home prescription drug disposal kits are also available. The kits provide an option for proper disposal at home and are safe for trash disposal.
— There will be a disposal event in partnership with the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday, April 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
— Prescription drugs can also be taken to Smith’s Food and Drug on Highway 50 in Dayton.
The Lyon County event is designed to offer education about safe disposal of unused or expired prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, prescription liquids, and pet medications. No sharps (syringes) can be accepted at this event, however. The effort is part of the nationwide federal drug round-up initiative.
“When medicines are no longer needed, it’s so important to dispose of them properly primarily for the health and welfare of others in your own household,” said Hannah McDonald, executive director of Partnership Carson City. “What’s safe to you may be fatal to someone else. Our goal is to teach our community that keeping medicines after they’re no longer needed creates preventable health risks. These drug round-ups are designed to be an easy and safe way to dispose of these prescription drugs.”
This event is designed to protect vulnerable populations in the community through education about proper disposal of unused or expired prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, prescription liquids, pet medications, sharps (syringes) and more. The effort is part of the federal drug round-up initiative. Bring unused or expired prescription drugs and sharps (syringes) in a sealed plastic bag or tin container.
At-home drug disposal kits are also available. The kits provide an option for proper disposal at home and are safe for trash disposal. In addition, medicine lock boxes are available as well as medical and commercial cannabis lock bags — both offered free of charge.
