Carson City School Board to discuss student to teacher ratios, educator awards, and more Tuesday

The Carson City School Board meeting will take place Tuesday, April 23 beginning at 6 p.m. at Carson High School.
The board will receive an update regarding the district’s class size reduction quarterly report.
By state law, classrooms must meet a certain teacher to student ratio. By NRS 388.700, these range from 16:1 for Kindergarten - second grade, 18:1 for third grade, and 25:1 for fourth and fifth grades.
However, under NRS 388.720, school districts of counties with populations of less than 100,000 people are able to set alternative ratios so long as they develop a plan to reduce the pupil-teacher ratios.
Those ratios allow for a 22:1 ratio for grades first through third, and 25:1 for grades four and five.
Currently, all schools with the exception of Empire Elementary and Mark Twain Elementary are over the allowed ratio of 16:1 for Kindergarten, ranging from 17:1 to 19:1.
For first grades, the only school over the allowed ratio is Seeliger Elementary with a 23:1 ratio.
All schools are complying for second grade classrooms.
All schools with the exception of Fremont, Fritsch and Seeliger Elementary are compliant in third grade. Those noncompliant range from 23:1 to 25:1.
All schools are complying for fourth grade and fifth grade classrooms.
— Awards will be given in recognition of the 2024 Carson City School District Educational Support Professionals of the Year, Certified Educators of the Year, and Administrator of the Year.
