Carson City Search and Rescue find families stuck in canyon, one flown by Care Flight
Two SUVs that became stuck in the mud overnight in El Dorado Canyon southeast of Carson City were found Monday morning. One person was flown by Care Flight for an injury, a Carson City Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue official said.
Both SUVS became stuck at an elevation of 5,836 feet in the Pine Nut Mountains sometime Sunday with Search and Rescue beginning operations after midnight, said Dave Spencer, Commander of Carson City Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue. An adult male among a group of 11 was flown by Care Flight at around 7:30 a.m. His condition is unknown at this time.
Search and Rescue teams made their way to the SUVs that were occupied by groups of families shortly after Care Flight arrived and flew the injured man out. Conditions were slow going through the canyon and it was difficult to find them because of limited communication access, said Spencer.
Search and Rescue provided the families with food, water and blankets. Several children were with the adults, said Spencer. Their conditions were good considering they spent the night deep in a canyon, said Spencer.
Search and Rescue was followed into the area by teams of people who were friends and family of those who became stuck in the SUVs. They were gearing up to bring everyone out of the canyon, said Spencer.
El Dorado Canyon, located between Carson City and Lyon County in the Pine Nut Mountains, is a popular location for SUV excursions. Spencer noted the canyon was full of mud slides and bogs, making travel in four-wheel drive vehicles extremely difficult.
Friends and family members were making their way up to the stuck SUVs in an attempt to pull them out of the mud, he said.
