Sale of the city-owned Northgate building, housing several Carson City non-profits, to begin in July
A discussion was held Thursday by the Board of Supervisors regarding the potential disposal of the city-owned property at 2621 Northgate Lane.
At the meeting, supervisors tabled the decision until language could be updated, but agreed that the sale of the building will begin in early July.
The property includes 1.133 acres in total which includes the 15,841 square foot office building that is home to several local non-profits including the Ron Wood Center, the University of Nevada, Reno Extension, the CIRCLES initiative, and more.
Mayor Lori Bagwell explained during the meeting that the building needs maintenance, and the city has been leasing to its occupants for a $1 a year, which cannot cover the necessary maintenance needed.
Therefore the city has decided to dispose of the building to a non-profit, with city approval following a public bid.
Any qualifying public non-profit may bid on the building. A $15,000 cash down payment will be required.
Lisa Taylor of the UNR Extension gave public comment, stating they would not be throwing their hat in the ring to purchase the property.
“We won’t be submitting a bid but we care about the process,” said Taylor.
Joyce Buckingham, Director of Ron Wood Family Resource Center stated that all of the non-profits at the building were a very cohesive group.
“It has been a wonderful marriage,” said Buckingham. “Some of us have been here as long as 13 years.”
Buckingham stated that the Ron Woods Center would be bidding for the building, but asked for provisions including an extension of time since commercial loans take at least 60 days, as well as removing the language stating that the property would refer back to the city, which Buckingham states is getting in the way of being able to secure a loan.
“Banks don’t want to give the loan for the property if the city can take it back,” said Buckingham.
The agenda item will come back at the next meeting after language has been fixed.
Bids will be required to be in by the first meeting in July when the start of the sale will occur.
