Carson City area weather: Cold with snow showers possible Friday, sunny but chilly over weekend
Much colder temperatures with bouts of gusty wind, valley rain and Sierra snow are expected overnight into Friday around Carson City, Carson Valley and surrounding counties, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will warm slightly Saturday and Sunday.
For the mountains overnight into Friday, the slow moving spring storm system pushing through the region is expected to bring snowfall to the Sierra crest passes and west slopes with minor spillover into the eastern Sierra communities in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Five to 10 inches are possible across Tahoe crest passes such as Donner and Echo Summit with 1-3 inches down to lake level, according to National Weather Service forecasters. See NVroads.com or call 511 for the latest travel information.
A winter weather advisory is in effect for the west slope of the Sierra until 11 p.m. Friday and there's a winter storm warning for Northern Washoe County in Nevada and Lassen-Eastern Plumas and Eastern Sierra counties in California until 10 a.m. Friday.
Across the Nevada Basin and Range, forecasters say to expect a continuation of scattered rain and snow showers overnight into Friday with a few thunderstorms possible, with stronger cells that could produce frequent lightning, gusty outflow winds and hail, forecasters note.
For the northern Nevada region Friday, there's a chance for widespread scattered rain and snow/snow pellet showers. Most shower activity will taper off after sunset into Friday evening, forecasters said.
Areas of western Nevada, including Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, Storey and Washoe counties could see snow showers or pellet snowfall down to the valley floors overnight into Friday but road accumulations should be limited due to relatively warm surfaces and daytime heating, foresters note. Foothill areas could see up to 1 inch in any heavier showers.
The storm is expected to bring cold temperature with it, anywhere between 15 to 20 degrees below normal Friday, with slight warming, and sunny skies over the weekend. Highs Saturday are forecasted to be in the upper 40s Saturday and near 50 on Sunday for the Carson City area.
Hard freezes are expected each night this weekend beginning Thursday night into Friday morning. The weather service advises to protect sensitive plants and wrap exposed irrigation systems.
