Carson City teacher cuts hair in heartwarming gesture for children with cancer

When Eagle Valley Middle School English Teacher Michaela Filocamo learned her 5-year-old nephew was diagnosed with Leukemia, she felt impressed to make a bold statement in his name to honor and support him and other children battling cancer by donating her hair and funds raised (by her students, families and school colleagues) to the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation. In total, $1,520.50 was raised.
Filocamo said she was inspired to donate her hair after witnessing the bravery and resilience of many northern Nevada children undergoing cancer treatment. She wanted to inspire young cancer warriors with a heartwarming gesture.
"These kids show incredible strength every day," she said. "If my donation can bring even a small measure of comfort or confidence to a child in need, then this is all worth it."
The event, held in the middle school’s main gym in Carson City on Thursday, March 21, not only was powerful act of empathy and support, but it also helped highlight the community’s role in fighting against pediatric cancer.
Hair donations provide high-quality wigs for children who have lost hair due to cancer treatment, Filocamo continued. Public events also raise awareness about pediatric cancer and the importance of community support.
"The event was a teachable moment for mine and many other students at Eagle Valley Middle School who may have otherwise been unaware of the impacts of cancer and the significance of giving back to those in need,” she said. “Many students and faculty members expressed their admiration for my decision and were inspired to participate in the charitable event."
