Sunday morning snow causing spinouts, travel problems throughout western Nevada
Steady snow that began collecting on roadways and freezing overnight causing a number of spinouts between Reno and Washoe Valley, Carson City and surrounding counties has prompted a winter weather advisory from the National Weather Service through 11 a.m. Sunday morning.
Forecasters says the snow amounts could reach up to 4 inches, with locally higher totals possible in heavier snow showers.
Chains or snow tires are required on I-580 through Washoe Valley, Highway 50 East to Dayton, where there was an accident at around around 7:10 a.m.; State Route 341 (Geiger Grade Rd) and State Route 431 (Mt. Rose Highway.)
Nevada State Police Highway Patrol has responded to 24 roadway incidents on the roadway since 4:45 Sunday morning.
The advisory area is Southern Washoe county including Reno-Sparks, along with portions of Storey, Lyon, Carson City, and Douglas counties. Motorists can expect slippery road conditions and areas of low visibility and the potential of black ice in some areas.
Even light snowfall causes major travel delays, especially during periods of high traffic volume. Be sure to allow extra time to reach your destination. Leave extra space between vehicles since it takes longer to stop on slick roadways.
