Carson City man arrested, admits to stealing car and stripping it of tires and rims
A 29-year-old man was arrested Thursday on felony charges of possession of stolen property and grand larceny of an automobile, according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office.
Jonathan Baumgardner is being held on $25,000 bail. He admitted to stealing a vehicle, stripping it of its tires and rims and then dumping it in a parking lot, according to the arrest report filed by the investigating detective.
Officers responded to the 600 block of Hot Springs Road to assist in a grand larceny motor vehicle investigation. On arrival Detective David LeGros contacted Sgt. Brian Humphrey who was with the suspect.
LeGros advised suspect Baumgardner that he was investigating a series of thefts in Carson City. Baumgardner then admitted that the stolen vehicle that his sister had been arrested in was in fact his and she did not have anything to do with it, the arrest report states.
The detective spoke with the suspect's sister and requested consent to search her residence for any property related to stolen vehicles. The woman consented at which time she showed detectives a set of four rims and tires that were located on her back patio, the arrest report states.
Upon finding the tires and rims the detective contacted suspect Baumgarder again and read him his Miranda rights and advised that it was believed that the tires and rims belonged to a vehicle that was reported stolen and later recovered in Carson City.
Baumgardner admitted to stealing a green Honda in Carson City near Arrowhead and the softball fields. The stolen rims and tires were recovered and the man was taken to jail for further questioning.
While speaking, Detective LeGros showed the man a map of the area where the Honda was located and the man admitted to bringing the vehicle back to his sister's and then, later dumped it off at a nearby apartment complex near his sister's apartment, the arrest report states.
Baumgardner again stated that he removed the tires, rims, radio and some lights from the vehicle. The victim of the auto theft was contacted and he verified the rims and tires belonged to him.
