Strong winter blast covers Carson City in heavy snowfall
A powerful winter storm arrived in Northwestern Nevada Thursday night, dropping several inches of snow in valley locations throughout the region.
More than half a foot of snow fell overnight in Carson City. Some areas of town have seen about a foot or more of snow.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, more snow is in the forecast throughout the day Friday with another two to six inches of accumulation possible in lower elevations and six to 12 inches above 5,000 feet.
A winter storm warning is in effect until 11 p.m. Friday night, the NWS said.
The forecast high in Carson City Friday is 37 degrees, and the overnight low is expected to dip to 23 degrees by early Saturday morning.
Saturday's high is forecast for 39 degrees. By Sunday, the weather should be clearing to partly sunny skies and a high of 43 degrees.
Friday's forecast calls for a 90 percent chance of continued precipitation throughout the day, dropping to 50 percent by Saturday morning.
"Avoid travel if possible," the NWS alert said. "If you must travel, prepare for long delays and carry emergency kit with extra food, water and clothing.
"If you stay home, have a backup plan in case of power outages," the alert said.
