Senators baseball recap: Carson's offense falls flat in 4-3 loss to Reno
The Carson Senators’ baseball season is in full swing, as a 4-3 loss to the Reno Huskies concluded a total of five games in five days.
Carson finished 2-2 in the Mike Bearman Tournament, with wins against Fernley and Central Catholic. With the loss on Wednesday, Reno took a 2-0 lead in the season series with the Senators.
“We’ve had good moments and bad moments during those four games,” said third baseman Abel Carter. “We just need to find more consistency to turn those close losses into wins. That way we could build up momentum heading into the postseason.”
Starting pitchers Jared Barnard (Carson) and Mickey Coyne (Reno) kept the game scoreless for three whole frames until Sawyer Jacksick’s RBI double gave Reno a 1-0 lead in the 4th.
RBI singles from Kahle Good and Landon Truesdale capped-off a four-hit 2-run 5th inning, making the score 2-1 in Carson’s favor.
Reno answered back the next inning, as an RBI’s from Sawyer (Walked with bases loaded) and Lane Oliphant ( 1B, 2 RBI) gave Reno a 4-2 lead.
After a rough outing Barnard (5 ⅓ IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 4 ER,) was relieved of his duties by Max Fontaine.
Coyne (4 ⅔ IP, 6 H, 2 BB, 2 ER, 6 K) was replaced by August Soza.
After an RBI double from Barnard cut the Carson deficit to one, Truesdale’s pop-fly to right field ended the game.
Post game, Good gave his thoughts on the adjustments needed to get back on track.
“I think we played a really good series against Reno,” he said. “We can work on getting into better counts at the plate and cut down on the mental mistakes. If we do those things, we can keep progressing through the season as a team.”
Key performers for Reno included: Jacksick (1-2, 2B, 2 RBI) and Oliphant (1-3, 1B, 2 RBI).
Key performers for Carson included: Truesdale (2-3, 2 1B, 1 RBI), Good (1-2, 1B, RBI), and Barnard (1-3, 2B, RBI).
Carson will look to bounce-back against Spanish Springs Friday.
