Carson City School Board approves new sex education materials, hears budget update and more
The Carson City School Board of Trustees met Tuesday and discussed new health and sex education materials, a budget update, reviewed textual updates and more.
Trustees approved a number of new health and sex education materials as recommended by the Family Life Committee.
According to Cheryl Macy, middle school teachers specifically have been requesting additional materials, so the Family Life Committee has been working on reviewing and recommending additional materials for the past four months.
The materials can be reviewed in the agenda packet and include a range of materials including videos, powerpoints and reading materials.
The approved materials are:
- Am I Ready? Making Healthy Sexual Decisions (video) recommended for grades 7 and up.
- HIV and Me: Marissa’s Story (video) recommended for grades 5 and up.
- Promoting Health Among Teens (curriculum from Health and Human Services) recommended for grades 7 and up.
- Birth Control Methods: Where Do They Go? (handout) recommended grades 7 and up.
- Birth Control Options Grid (handout) recommended grades 7 and up
- Female Reproductive Slideshow and Male Reproductive Slideshow recommended grades 7 and up.
- The Surprising Effects of Pregnancy by TEDx (video) recommended grades 7 and up.
- Why it’s so hard to cure HIV/AIDS TED Ed (video) recommended grades 7 and up
- Use your words (slideshow) recommended grades 7 and up
- Multiple articles by Kids Health recommended grades 7 and up
Macy noted that while the Family Life Committee recommends a grade range, teachers will individually determine what is age appropriate for their classrooms so while some material may be recommended for 7th grade, some teachers may choose to hold off until a higher grade level for some materials.
The Family Life Committee meets monthly through the school year.
— The Board heard a number of textual updates to various district policies. Many policies were written in 1979 and required updates to align with other district policies as well as state and federal law.
— The Board heard a budget update. Currently, the district has a million dollar deficit; however, with upcoming retirements, the dissolving of four elementary school teacher positions due to lower enrollment, and other factors, that deficit is projected to decrease to $950,000.
