FISH hosts fundraiser at Nevada State Prison in Carson City on May 18
Friends In Service Helping (FISH) is hosting a new fundraiser that has a two-fold purpose. The fundraise is helping to fund a new student housing project and to recognize the work done in Carson City by the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society.
Studies have shown that communities are not better off by creating more affordable housing. Successful communities have found ways to make it so fewer people need affordable housing. So, FISH has decided to build student housing, so more people can gain the technical skills needed to earn high paying jobs available in our community.
Primarily the fundraiser is help fund the final 4 million in construction costs for the FISH student housing project that is nearing completion. It will provide housing for individuals and their families, once they are accepted in a technical certificate training program in the trades and medical field. This includes nursing, construction management, IT, advanced manufacturing, journeymen electricians, HVAC, CDL truck driving and more.
The secondary purpose is to recognize the work done by the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society. The Nevada State Prison was first used in 1862, and now tours provide revenue to enhance the site’s educational programs and staffing, so tours can be offered more frequently.
The funraising event will occur on May 18 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Nevada State Prison. The venue will include tours, live music, auctions, dancing and fabulous food and will certainly draw visitors from Sacramento to Ely, and from Battle Mountain to Vegas.
