Lyon County Sheriff: Dayton child expected to live after being attacked by family dog
An 8-year-old Dayton child was flown Thursday afternoon by Care Flight after being attacked by the family dog, according to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.
Central Lyon County Fire Department, Lyon County Animal Control and the sheriff's office were dispatched at 3:56 p.m. to the 200 block of Riverboat Road in Dayton for a reported dog bite.
Emergency personnel discovered an 8-year-old juvenile had sustained significant injuries from the family’s dog, an approximately 50 pound Shar Pei, according to a Lyon County Sheriff's Office news release.
The juvenile was treated by medics and ultimately flown by helicopter to Renown Medical Center for additional treatment. The juvenile is expected to live, but the extent of the injuries is unknown at this time, the release states.
LCSO and animal control worked to gain control over the dog, who was actively vicious and trying to attack, the release states.
Animal control determined they were unable to safely secure the dog due to its aggressiveness. Animal Control and the dog’s owner requested the dog be euthanized, the release states.
Lyon County Sheriff’s Office personnel euthanized the dog on scene.
"The dog was later secured and will undergo testing procedures to try to identify if it suffered from infectious disease. The cause of the attack is still under investigation, and it is not known at this time what caused the dog to become vicious," the release states.
The incident, including the dog’s owners, are under active investigation to determine if criminal conduct occurred during or leading to this incident. Additional information will be released if and when it becomes available regarding this case, LCSO said.
If the public has any information regarding this incident, please contact the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office at 775-463-6600 and request to speak with LCSO Investigations Sgt. Nicholas Baugh.
