Miller Wellness Center is unique, women-owned Carson City startup; hosts March 11 grand opening
Eddie Miller of Eddie Miller Counseling only moved into the offices above Eve’s Eatery on Telegraph Street in downtown Carson City less than five months ago, but since then, she has brought together several women-owned businesses in a wellness startup with one goal in mind: providing a holistic experience for clients, businesses and the community at large.
The collection of offices has transformed into the Miller Wellness Center, which combines multiple wellness and wellness-adjacent businesses in a way that makes them accessible to all clients of the building.
Miller’s background is in substance abuse counseling, and prior to working in private practice, she worked in rehab facilities and prisons. However, she realized she would be better able to help people in a way where she could promote wellness within their treatment plans.
“Addiction in the field, you treat the disease,” Miller said. “I don’t want to treat the disease, I want to treat the person. I want to bring them things they’ve never experienced before, whether its meditation or energy healing or yoga or nutrition — I think that’s something that’s being lost in the system.”
Within the Miller Wellness Center, "traditional" businesses such as holistic nutrition and energy healing share space with an attorney, the Messy Kids Art School, and a registered dental hygienist and myofunctional therapist.
While their businesses may vary, what connects them all is their passion to help those in the community. Miller gives each business a monthly discount on their rent if they agree to offering free services, seminars or education packages to each other’s clients.
“I can tell my clients all I want about nutrition, but hearing it from an actual expert is completely different,” Miller said.
Miller does not see the Wellness Center as an end point for most of the businesses in the space.
“The best case scenario is they use this space to grow and expand their businesses to the point they’re too big for us anymore,” Miller said. “Then maybe they’ll create their own wellness centers, where they can in turn help other women starting out.”
Statistics show that within the U.S., women-only owned businesses make up only 22.2 percent of all businesses. By offering space in a start-up like environment, with low rents, space-sharing opportunities, and more financial incentives, Miller hopes to help increase that number within our own community.
Something all of the businesses also agree on is the fact that they do not want to promote alcohol with their businesses.
However, that doesn’t mean they haven’t set their sights on joining the Wine Walk — but instead of wine, they hope to be able to offer non-alcoholic hydration stations.
“So many activities revolve around alcohol, and for those who are sober, it can be very isolating,” Miller said.
During their Grand Opening on March 11, which takes place from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. the center will be open for community members to learn more about each business while sipping on refreshments, eating snacks, and taking part in raffles.
Miller Wellness Center is family friendly thanks to Messy Kids Art School, and activities for the kids will be offered during the Grand Opening as well.
