Carson City area weather: Cold and more snow possible Wednesday and Thursday
Another cold low pressure system will bring more snow and snow showers Wednesday and Thursday to the Carson City region, with lake effect snow bands again possible Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
The weather system, known to forecasters as a "slider" could affect the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes. A Winter Weather Advisory was issued from 1 to 10 p.m. Wednesday. The system does not have a lot of moisture and its track suggests light snow amounts for both the Sierra and Western Nevada, with up to 4 inches possible over the storm period as the cold front moves south through the area.
By late Wednesday evening into Thursday, snow showers will be possible just about anywhere but the best chances will be to along the eastern Sierra from Alpine County southward into Mono County and western portions of Mineral County, according to the weather service.
Again snowfall will remain light with only a couple inches accumulation. The exception will be to the south of Lake Tahoe and both Pyramid and Walker Lakes as conditions become favorable for lake effect snow bands to form, according to the weather service.
Where these bands form, significantly more snow can occur with 6-12 inches possible. This could have impacts on I-80 between Reno and Fernley, Highway 89 from South Lake Tahoe to Meeks Bay, and Highway 95 near Hawthorne.
Brisk north winds and very cold temperatures will dominate Thursday with single digit temperatures and low wind chills for the high Sierra. As the upper low moves farther south Thursday night and skies begin to clear, temperatures will once again plummet by Friday morning.
High temperatures for the Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County regions will be in the low to mid 30s, Wednesday through Friday, with overnight lows in the mid to low teens.
