Windy winter weather returns to Carson City and Sierra
Unseasonably warm days and clear night skies will come to an end this week as a low pressure system from the Gulf of Alaska moves into the Carson City and Sierra region beginning Monday bringing wind, rain and snow through the week.
The trough will bring an end to the mild weather with much colder temperatures and strong gusty winds, according to the National Weather Service in Reno and Carsonweather.com.
Strong winds will impact the area Monday and Tuesday with gusts anticipated to be over 100 mph along the Sierra ridges between Monday and Wednesday. Strong and potentially damaging winds will also be possible in valley locations with gusts of 50 to 70 mph, according to the weather service.
A High Wind Watch has been issued by the weather service for all areas of Northern Nevada and much of the east side of the Sierra from late tonight through Tuesday evening. Precipitation will stay mainly in the Sierra Tuesday until a cold front moves through late Tuesday night and Wednesday.
The weather service reports with "high confidence" that there will be a period of heavy snow in the Sierra with at least a brief period of rain changing to snow in lower valleys of western Nevada as the cold front passes on Wednesday. The cold and unsettled conditions will bring additional periods of snow to the region through the remainder of the week, according to the weather service.
