Carson City area weather: Another shot of light snow possible Wednesday
A dry cold front dropped some light snow across the Sierra and Carson City region Monday, with another weak weather system that could bring a few more light showers Wednesday night before dry weather returns for the rest of the week, according to the National Weather Service.
Below average temperatures will rise to near average by Wednesday. A cold system out of the Gulf of Alaska, however, looks possible by next Sunday or Monday, according to the weather service.
For the short term though, other than a few residual snow showers in southern Mono County, it should be dry across the region Tuesday, according to the weather service. Afternoon temperatures will remain near or slightly below average, around 5 degrees, which is notable and noticeable, the weather service says because for the past two weeks temperatures have been 10-20 degrees above average.
For Wednesday, weather service models show another shortwave trough dropping out of the north through Nevada, with the best moisture and dynamics across northern into eastern Nevada and renewed chances for light snow showers. For now, the most likely places for travel impacts would be for areas near the Oregon border across into the central Nevada Basin and Range.
For the rest of the week, the upper level ridge that has brought us the warm and dry weather tries to build back into the West Coast for the end of the week, but this is short-lived as a wave looks as if it will make its way down from the Gulf of Alaska. This increases winds over the weekend as a strong cold front pushes through the region from the north.
Moisture from the system is uncertain. However, a very cold air mass is associated with the system, bringing temperatures down quite a bit, NWS forecasters says. High temperatures at the start of next week have the potential to be 10-15 degrees below normal.
