Carson City deputies make string of alcohol-related arrests

Carson City sheriff's deputies have made several alcohol-related arrests since Monday. A 50-year-old Galt, Calif., man was arrested early Tuesday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence, having an open container and not having a valid driver's license, all misdemeanors.

The man was reported by a witness to be passed out in his vehicle for more than an hour at a gas station in the 1600 block of East Fifth Street. Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies arrived and found the man sleeping with the vehicle running and the lights on, according to the arrest report.

A deputy had to shake the man to get him to wake up. Officers found two opened beers in the center console of the vehicle, both beers approximately a third full, the arrest report states.

The man submitted to field sobriety tests and could not satisfactorily complete several of the tests. A preliminary breath test the man provided was a .169, the arrest report states. He was arrested at 5:30 a.m. Bail: $1,521.

— A 21-year-old man, and a 56-year-old woman were arrested Monday at 5:51 p.m. at an Arizona Circle home. The man faces a misdemeanor charge of DUI and both face charges of obstructing officers.

According to the arrest report, deputies responded to the area of South Carson and Colorado streets on a report of a possible DUI driver. A witness reported that a silver Honda Civic was unable to maintain lanes and nearly hit his vehicle and ran into a median.

The witness followed the car to a home on Arizona Circle and saw a man exit the vehicle. The witness contacted deputies to meet nearby. Deputies then went to the home where they observed the vehicle to be parked partially on the sidewalk. The right rear wheel was on the sidewalk and the car was parked in an angle. Officers observed fresh scraping and rub marks on the front right fender and door. There was also a slight dent to the right front fender. Officers took photographs of the vehicle, the arrest report states.

Officers knocked on door of the home several times. After numerous attempts the 56-year-old woman answered. Officers inquired as to who was driving the vehicle that was parked and the woman said she had just returned home. She could not say where she was coming from but insisted she was driving the car and was the only one home, the arrest report states.

The witness was escorted to the residence to make an identity of the driver that almost hit him. The witness was certain the woman was not the driver he had seen in the Honda, the arrest report states.

Officers asked the woman for consent to search the home for the suspect the witness had seen. The woman granted consent and walked officers through the house, chiding them angrily that no one else was in the home and insisting she was the driver, the arrest report states. As a deputy completed a check of the garage a commotion was heard on the north side of the house. Sgt. Mays had confronted the 21-year-old man who was attempting to jump the fence.

The man was detained. He told the officer that the 56-year-old woman had nothing to do with what had happened and that he had been driving the car, having arrived at the home a few minutes prior. The woman was then detained for obstructing, which angered both of them, the arrest report states.

The 21-year-old man was asked if he would submit to field sobriety tests, which he refused and demanded that he have a lawyer. He was read his Miranda warning but he refused to speak specifically about the incident, calling the arresting officers racist among other words, the report states.

The man then changed his story saying he didn't do anything wrong and he was not driving the vehicle. He was taken into custody and told officers he would not cooperate with anything including a breath test or blood sample, the arrest report states.

A search warrant was requested and granted to obtain blood samples, in which two were taken. The 21-year-old man was booked on DUI and obstruction charges. Bail: $1,544. The 56-year-old woman was booked on an obstruction charge. Bail: $412.

— A 31-year-old Carson City woman was placed into civil protective custody Monday after an incident at a local restaurant where an ambulance was called. The woman was taken by ambulance to the hospital after being found grossly intoxicated.

According to the arrest report, a man who was with the woman told officers they were on their first date and that when he went to pick her up, she disappeared into her home for several minutes and acted strangely when she returned. The couple went to the restaurant, where the bartender initially refused to serve the woman because she appeared highly intoxicated. She was served alcohol, a vodka drink and a beer by a waiter, the arrest report states.

Shortly after receiving the drinks she began to slouch in her seat and drool, the report states. Restaurant staff thought something was wrong and called an ambulance. The woman's date was embarrassed and took his food and moved to another table, the arrest report states.

At the hospital she was verbally abusive and uncooperative with hospital staff, those in the waiting room and with officers, the report states. A preliminary breath test of the woman resulted in a .320 at 3:50 p.m.

The woman was later taken to jail where her behavior escalated. She was placed in a padded cell for her protection and observation. She screamed and struck the door for several minutes. She was observed on a security monitor removing her shirt and attempting to choke herself, the arrest report states. Several jail deputies entered the cell to stop her. She was covered with a smock where she calmed down. She was to be released from jail when she sobered up.

— A 35-year-old Carson City man was arrested Monday, 8:57 p.m. on misdemeanor larceny and trespassing charges. According to the arrest report, officers were dispatched to a pharmacy in the 200 block of Fairview Drive where a man had stolen a beer from the store. The man told officers that he took the beer because he didn't have any money. A citizens arrest was made. The man was booked into jail and provided a breath sample of .190. Bail: $969.

— A 66-year-old transient was arrested Monday in the 1800 block of North Carson Street on a misdemeanor charge of criminal contempt. Officers were dispatched to a business in reference to an unwanted subject. Business staff advised there was an intoxicated man harassing customers in the parking lot. Staff advised they did not wish to press charges and informed officers the man had left the property prior to the deputy arriving.

The deputy located the man walking from the area of a motel and stopped him after he crossed the street. The officer noticed alcohol on the man's breath. The man showed the officer identification where it was found he had a warrant for criminal contempt. The man was booked into jail without incident. Bail: $500.

Those arrested and facing charges are innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
