More snow in forecast this weekend for Northwestern Nevada, Eastern California
Another round of storms will impact the region this weekend. While snow accumulations aren't expected to rival those from last weekend, disruptions to travel could still be significant.
Beginning Friday afternoon, the first in a series of three storms could bring a 30-60 percent chance of snow to the greater Carson City area after 4 p.m. and again after 10 p.m. However, this system is forecast to be weak and should not leave more than an inch on the valley floors.
Then another system arrives Saturday, bringing with it a 60-80 percent chance of precipitation in the form of snow with accumulations of up to four inches possible through Saturday night. Winds are expected to pick up Saturday, too, gusting to between 40-45 miles per hour (mph) through the evening hours.
This storm is forecast to impact the Sierra Nevada with 6-14 inches of new snow possible in the mountains.
Most lower elevation areas will see a break in the snowfall on Saturday, the NWS reported, although. Not much accumulation is expected for the valleys between the first two storms Friday and Saturday.
But then a third stronger storm arrives Sunday, carrying with it the possibility of 1-3 more feet of snow in the mountains and up to four inches possible in valley locations.
The chance of snow the Carson City area Sunday is about 80 percent with 1-3 inches possible, and winds gusting up to 40 mph.
Total snow accumulation over the next three days is forecast to be 2-5 inches possible at elevations below 5,000 feet.
Daytime high temperatures around Carson City are forecast to reach only into the 30s.
The second and third storms Saturday and Sunday are expected to occur during periods of peak skier commutes over Sierra passes. So, while total snowfall accumulations seem small compared to last weekend, disruptions to travel could be significant.
