Carson City arrests: DUI suspect drives off, travels on sidewalk and goes wrong way

A 52-year-old man was arrested early Sunday for felony eluding and other offenses, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Derrick Martin Bridges of Boise, Idaho, was taken into custody at 5:06 a.m. He was also arrested for suspicion of DUI, reckless driving and driving the wrong way.

According to the booking report, deputies responded for a report of a BMW vehicle stopped in the turning lane for approximately 5 to 10 minutes. The reporting party stated they honked their horn however the driver was unresponsive.

Deputies made contact with the driver and observed the vehicle's engine was running, lights and stereo were on. The officers observed the driver of the vehicle appeared unconscious. A deputy began knocking on the window, however, he was not responding. The officer knocked several more times, and approximately a minute later, he responded, but appeared incoherent, the report states.

The driver responded slowly and then began driving, approximately 15 to 20 mph on the wrong side of the road, the report states. Two deputies attempted to make a traffic stop on the vehicle using lights and sirens, and followed the vehicle as it traveled on the sidewalk, hitting several bushes and continued northbound on North Carson Street on the sidewalk.

The vehicle eventually road off the sidewalk and entered East College Parkway. While the BMW was exiting the sidewalk, it nearly hit another vehicle that pulled off to the side. The driver of that vehicle moved out of the way right before the driver of the BMW was going to hit them, the report states.

The vehicle traveled past East College Parkway and nearly hit a patrol vehicle, and the continued traveling northbound on North Carson Street, passing Silver Oak Drive and Arrowhead Drive. The BMW finally stopped on North Carson Street just north of Arrowhead Drive. The vehicle traveled approximately 4,200 feet in the wrong lane, the arrest report states.

The man's vehicle was towed due to it being in the median. The man initially agreed to field sobriety tests at the detention center, the report states.

He refused a one-leg stand test and would not consent to a preliminary breath or blood test, saying "I'm not giving you shit," the deputy report states. After the man's refusal, deputies initiated a search and seizure warrant for a blood draw. The warrant was granted by a Carson City judge.
