Comma Coffee cleared to reopen after 'critical' health code violations
After Comma Coffee, located in downtown Carson City, was shuttered by the Health Department for a series of “critical” violations and failure to reach owner June Joplin, Joplin announced to media sources that the business has been cleared to reopen.
However, a sign on the door told customers that, while the restaurant was closed down, the pipes froze, and would need to be fixed before reopening.
Joplin told media sources she hoped to reopen next week prior to the upcoming legislative session beginning.
The Health Department cited numerous violations during its Jan. 18 inspection report, which came as a recheck after its Dec. 14 violations. After it failed to pass inspection again, and after the ‘B’ grade was repeatedly removed from the front door where customers could view it, the health department forced the closure of the restaurant until the violations could be dealt with.
Violations included what was described as a “severe” mouse infestation, with droppings found near food areas, food items being sold past their expiration dates by almost two weeks in some cases, cats continuing to live inside the premises despite being told to evict them, failure to sanitize dishes and utensils, failure for employees to wash hands prior to handling food, and many more.
Joplin denied claims in an interview with media sources that there was a severe infestation.
Joplin has not responded to Carson Now regarding the closing or reopening of Comma Coffee.
