Monopoly Lake Tahoe Edition board game unveiled

Lake Tahoe and board game enthusiasts have something new to celebrate this first month of 2023: The Monopoly: Lake Tahoe Edition game is now available. Making an appearance last week was Mr. Monopoly himself, who unveiled the game Wednesday at Edgewood Tahoe, officially declaring the region as "Passing Go."

Game players can visit Glazed and Confuzed, Keep Tahoe Blue, Cobber by the Lake, Mt. Tallac, Friday's Station Pony Express stop, Village Toys, Vikingsholm, Geared for Games, Fanny Bridge, Meeks Bay, Monkey Rock, Hellman-Ehrman Mansion, Kings Beach, Crown Motel, The Grid Bar and Grill, Susie Scoops, Sand Harbor, Mt. Rose, MS Dixie, Zephyr Cove, Fox & Hound, Cave Rock, Red Hut Café, Edgewood Golf, Kingsbury Grade, Edgewood Resort, and Emerald Bay.

"We are super excited," said Matt Grime, owner of Fox & Hound which is featured on the game board. "We are big Monopoly fans."

Grime and many other business owners located around Lake Tahoe responded to a call for businesses interested in being a spot on the gameboard.

"We're stoked," said Glazed and Confused owners Anthony and Mara Cavallaro. "We're both Monopoly fans."
The League to Save Lake Tahoe is also featured on the board, and Chris Josephy of the environmental nonprofit said "Keeping Tahoe Blus will be on everyone's mind as they play."

The game was released by Top Trumps USA, the American division of Winning Moves International (creators of classic games and puzzles) under license from global branded entertainment leader, Hasbro.

Monopoly: Lake Tahoe Edition replaces the perennial board game’s famous Atlantic City squares (from Boardwalk to Park Place) with representations of the much-loved Lake Tahoe area historic landmarks, treasured natural destinations, summer and wintertime favorites, and time-honored businesses, alongside customized Community Chest and Chance playing cards to ensure each detail of the game pays homage to this iconic destination.

“We’re thrilled to launch Monopoly: Lake Tahoe Edition to celebrate this intentionally beloved natural beauty and treasured destination. We’ve spent months creating a portrayal of the area’s gorgeous communities that we hope locals and visitors alike will enjoy for years to come,” says Aaron Green, a representative from Top Trumps USA. “We’ve incorporated important feedback from locals to truly make this a fun and engaging game for Tahoe locals and beyond.”

"Thank you so much for bringing Lake Tahoe to Monopoly and Monopoly to Lake Tahoe," said former Mayor Middlebrook at the original game launch in April 2022. "There are so many different aspects and unique characteristics of Tahoe that would make great game pieces."

More than 1,200 emails and phone calls were received after Mr. Monopoly and others at that launch party asked for the public's input on what should be put on the Tahoe board.

Monopoly: Lake Tahoe Edition is available for $39.95 on Amazon, CVS, and www.toptrumps.us. The game is also for sale in several local retailers including all four Red Hut Café locations, Fox & Hound, Glazed and Confused, Village Toys - both in South Lake Tahoe and Incline Village, Edgewood Tahoe, League to Save Lake Tahoe, MS Dixie, and on the North Shore, Mountain Hardware, Geared for Games, and Grid Bar and Grill.
