Carson City's Muscle Powered earns national recognition for Capitol to Tahoe Trail
Carson City nonprofit Muscle Powered, which is dedicated to promoting and creating pedestrian and bicycle-friendly infrastructure by maintaining and developing trails and resources, has been awarded for the second time a national recognition from the Coalition for Recreational Trails.
One award is given annually to projects funded by the Recreational Trails Program and are considered outstanding in each of the following categories; Construction and Design, Maintenance and Rehabilitation, Public-Private Partnerships and Access to Public Lands, Community Linkage, Education and Communication, Accessibility Enhancement, Multiple-Use Management and “Corridor Sharing”, Use of Youth Conservation/Service Corps and Community Outreach, Engaging Public-Sector Partners and the Enhancement of Federal Lands.
The first award was for the Ash to Kings Trail for Regional Connectivity in 2014.
This year, The Coalition for Recreational Trails has awarded Muscle Powered the Annual Achievement Award for outstanding use of Recreational Trails Program funds in the Community Linkage category. In addition to the two awards for Muscle Powered, the Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space Department received a Community Linkage award from the Coalition of Recreation Trails in 2021 for the 5th Street Trailhead and Trails Project.
The Capital to Tahoe Trail provides the first non-motorized singletrack connection from Carson City to the Tahoe Rim Trail and trails in the Lake Tahoe region. From the steps of the Capitol building in Carson City, a hiker is now able to quickly reach a singletrack trail that could take them on an incredible journey of 1,152 miles to Mexico or 1,606 miles to Canada!
This trail is truly a demonstration of how local, state and federal agencies can work together with non-profit organizations and private landowners to accomplish a dream that benefits our entire community. Muscle Powered will be formally recognized for this achievement on March 6, 2024 in Washington, D.C.
