Official theme for Nevada Day 2024 announced
The Nevada Day, Inc. Board of Directors announced the theme for the 2024 Nevada Day Parade to be our official state motto, “All For Our Country.”
“We couldn’t be more excited for this year’s theme!” said Jennell Peck, Nevada Day, Inc. President. “The state motto has not been used before as far back as our records show. Part of our mission is to promote history and what better way than to incorporate our official motto throughout the parade.”
Nevada has been a state since October 31, 1864 when the U.S. Congress admitted what was then the Nevada Territory as the 36th State. President Lincoln was in the heat of the Civil War and needed our votes to ensure his presidency continued. The fact our land held immeasurable silver ore which was being mined and could help fund the Northern efforts didn’t hurt. However, it was the electoral votes that Lincoln needed most.
The original motto was “Volens et Potens” which means “Willing and Able,” but February 24, 1866, the Nevada Legislature voted “All For Our Country” as the official motto replacing the original and paying homage to the importance of our loyalty to the nation. It was decided the motto would appear on the bottom of the state seal surrounded by 36 stars, as it still stands today.
It is understandable why “All For Our Country” was chosen as the official motto since the decision was made shortly after the civil war had ended. “Battle Born” is often mistaken as Nevada’s motto because it’s on the state flag. “Battle Born” was added to our flag in 1929 paying homage to the state being brought into the Union during the Civil War, but it has never been chosen as an official motto of the state.
“This year’s theme should make it pretty easy to decorate floats for the parade,” added Jennell Peck. “We are hoping for more decorations on the entries this year. So get out your red white and blue! It’s ‘All For Our Country’ in 2024!”
