Carson City deputies arrest suspect in multiple burglary cases after allegedly stealing from vacationing elderly couple
A 44-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday evening on counts of burglary, gun possession, and car theft.
According to the arrest report, Randy Lee Bauman was arrested in connection to multiple burglary incidents going back to Oct. 2022.
According to the arrest report, the first incident occurred at Northern Nevada Coin on Oct. 25, during which the window was smashed and a large number of unique painted coins were stolen, estimated to be worth around $3,500.
Later that afternoon, Bauman was registered to have sold the same type of painted coins to a Reno gold buying business, according to the arrest report.
Bauman had also entered Northern Nevada Coin the day before the robbery took place to sell a gold pendant.
On surveillance footage, Bauman appears to be watching the employees behind the coin desks. At around 9 p.m., Bauman returned to the store and took photographs of the inside of the business through the windows.
After 10 p.m., a masked subject was seen riding a bicycle around Northern Nevada Coin several times between 10 p.m. and 2:50 a.m.
The suspect placed a bag and sledgehammer behind the business, which was later thrown through the window. After the burglary, the suspect could be seen riding away toward Washington Street before disappearing from the surveillance footage.
On Oct. 26, deputies went to the residence of Bauman’s girlfriend and found Bauman’s truck parked on N. Walsh St. with a bicycle matching the bicycle in the footage in the bed of the truck. Deputies applied for a search warrant to search the truck and located Bauman’s clothing matching the surveillance footage of the burglary suspect inside the truck.
Deputies were not able to locate Bauman at that time and applied for an arrest warrant, which was granted.
January Burglary
On Jan. 4, deputies responded to a residential burglary on N. Walsh St, next door to Bauman’s girlfriend’s residence.
During the investigation, deputies learned that the elderly residents of the N. Walsh St. residence had left for vacation, and had told Bauman’s girlfriend and her mother they would be out of town and asked they watch for a package to be delivered.
Friends of the residents came to check on the house and feed their pets, and reported the burglary on Jan. 1, occurring sometime between Dec. 29 and New Years Day. The back door window had been broken out, and the inside of the house appeared to have been gone through: drawers were open, times were strewn about, firearms were scattered, and their residents’ Dodge truck was missing from the backyard.
The residents returned home on Jan. 2 and confirmed their truck, numerous pieces of jewelry, and six firearms had been stolen.
Deputies checked the pawn shop database and found Bauman had made three transactions between Dec. 26 and Dec. 31. Deputies showed photographs of the jewelry items, and the resident confirmed they belonged to her.
On Jan. 4, deputies located the truck abandoned on I-580 with the engine still warm, which appeared to have run out of fuel, according to the report.
On Jan. 12, deputies learned Bauman had been making suicidal statements to family members, and was at a motel with his 4-year-old child. Deputies responded to the motel and spoke with Bauman.
After the child was removed and deputies negotiated with Bauman for several minutes, he acknowledged the reports of suicidal statements.
Deputies took Bauman into custody for two felony burglary charges, grand larceny of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted person, and grand larceny of a motor vehicle.
Bail: $100,000
