Carson City area weather: Winter storm to bring more snow, wind and cold temps
Another winter storm system will move into Carson City and surrounding counties late Tuesday into Wednesday, bringing gusty winds, snow and cold temperatures, National Weather Service forecasters said.
The active weather pattern has prompted the a winter storm watch for the Carson City area and a winter storm warning for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra.
The storm is expected to bring accumulations between 2 and 4 inches for valley locations from the Reno area to Carson City and Carson Valley, 4 to 8 inches for foothill locations, 10 to 14 inches for Lake Tahoe communities such as Truckee and South Lake Tahoe, and 14 to 24 inches above 7,000 feet. Wind are expected to gust as high as 50 mph in lower elevations and 80 to 100 mph along Sierra ridges.
Motorists should plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday morning and evening commutes, forecasters said. Strong winds could cause damage to trees and power lines along with rapid decreases in visibility in areas of blowing snow. See NVroads.com or call 511 for the latest road conditions.
Forecasters say the midweek storm is expected to be similar to Saturday. A snowband accompanying a cold front will bring quick, heavy snowfall in a short period.
With this band expected to pass through during the peak school/work commute time, major travel disruptions are possible. Very cold temperatures behind the front may lead to flash freezes on roadways and prolonged hazardous travel conditions into the Thursday morning commute.
