Carson City School District mentors are going the extra mile
Secondary school administrators at Carson MS, Eagle Valley MS, and Carson and Pioneer High School in Carson City chose a support called Check and Connect to implement a system of mentorship provided by school staff.
The intervention is a Tier 2 approach in the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) for schools to address and support attendance and academic success in school.
The training for middle and high school staff as mentors began in October and will be supported by both the MTSS & Student Wellness and the Student Engagement & Support Departments. The training was facilitated by CCSD Coordinator, Stephanie Keating, and trainers from Check and Connect.
The new mentoring plan should be in place for students by next semester. It is much like the mentoring system Pioneer Academy had in place and was started by Conny Hernandez, office manager, a few years ago which provided mentoring for all students in the alternative school. This new Check and Connect mentoring plan will target students in need based on various criteria including attendance, and it will support staff members with training on how to be an effective mentor for students.
We are fortunate to have such dedicated staff in CCSD who volunteered for this new intervention. When kids feel connected, listened to, and engaged in their own education, great things happen! Students will see that someone will be checking in on them regularly as a mentor and this reinforces everything our educators are working hard to accomplish each day.
