Porch Movement formed in Carson City, Carson Valley aims to address 'loneliness epidemic'
Hello neighbors. We want to introduce ourselves. The Porch Movement is a newer, local 501c3 non-profit created to address the "Loneliness Epidemic." We are building community one porch at a time.
We are a passionate team of people who care deeply for those who are disconnected, isolated, and who feel alone as a result. We know this is a complicated public health crisis. It requires a community solution and we want to do our part. We are grateful for the many public health organizations that have tirelessly been doing their part.
We have a unique and simple approach to connect the disconnected and help those who are isolated yet craving community to take the step toward connection. We are always looking for other caring and passionate people to join us in this fight to eradicate this "Epidemic of Loneliness."
Keeping it simple is key. First, we are inspiring people to connect right in their own neighborhoods. Instead of driving up to your home and rushing into your house, what if you paused before you closed your door or garage? Take a minute to look up and wave and engage with one or two neighbors. Did you know there was a study that shows if you wave or say hello to at least six neighbors a day, it will improve your overall health?
We are looking for at least 50 people who would be willing to be a host in their neighborhood. To create a porch-like environment for relaxed conversation. An individual or couple who would be willing to identify two or three other neighbors whom you could invite over for a simple beverage and maybe a snack. No agenda other than to get to know them better.
We are here to provide tips, ideas, and encouragement. The more connected our neighborhoods are, the stronger and safer they will become. The stronger neighborhoods we have the stronger and more resilient our communities will be.
Would you prefer something more public so you can get used to the idea in a more neutral setting? Great, we have that too! We love supporting our local businesses and partnering with community agencies to provide relaxed connection opportunities for you to get to know other people.
We call these Open Porches. All are welcome! No agenda other than to build community together. We are holding space for people to be seen, heard, and valued in all their uniqueness. We have a variety of locations for you to participate in an Open Porch. Current connection opportunities happen in Carson City, Minden, Gardnerville and Genoa with more to come.
We have many ways for you to get involved. For more information, visit our website theporchmovement.com or follow us on Instagram or Facebook. We would love to meet you in person. Visit an Open Porch or help us make a difference by joining the movement today.
