Occupy Carson City Protest on Bank Transfer Day
Carson City, NV - Occupy Carson City, an extension of the Occupy Wall St. movement, will hold their weekly peaceful assembly on Saturday from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Legislature Sidewalks at 401 S. Carson Street in Downtown Carson City. Everyone is welcome to participate, and the group has been in close communication with law enforcement to avoid any problems.
Participants and organizers will meet at Comma Coffee at 312 S. Carson Street at 12:30 p.m. Participants can bring a sign or flag or use one of the group's. Free parking is available surrounding the cafe and at the Nevada State parking lots near E. 5th and S. Plaza streets.
Saturday, November 5th is also "Bank Transfer Day" when thousands of Americans have vowed to start accounts at credit unions and local banks in order to boycott and protest against the big banks for their foreclosure, fee-gouging, lending, and financial practices that have hurt millions. Signs at the Occupy Carson City protest will include "Support Small Local Banks" with some of the recommended banks including (in alphabetical order) El Dorado Savings Bank, Greater Nevada Credit Union, Heritage Bank of Nevada, and Nevada State Bank. The Saturday afternoon protest also coincides with Guy Fawkes Day and the monthly Downtown Carson City Wine Walk held downtown every first Saturday from 1-5 p.m. It is the group's fourth Saturday event, and they are determined to keep organizing, protesting, and collaborating with other Occupy groups in the state and around the country.
One of the participants and organizers, Janette Dean, explained, "Our country didn't get into this ludicrous economic mess overnight, and it hit many of us like a freight train over the last few years. We thought our elected representatives would be more forthcoming with solutions, but we're not going to wait in vain any longer. We'll continue taking to the streets to exercise our First Amendment rights until we feel our country is heading in the right direction again with some real and measurable progress." She added, "And we'll continue to find inspiration, and give support to, our brothers and sisters around the world who are also fighting against economic and political oppression by a minority elite of multinational corporations with far too much power and wealth. This new 'corporatocracy' form of government has got to end."
Occupy Carson City is a leaderless group, following the example of the Occupy Wall Street in participating in a horizontal democracy.
