“Embracing Dyslexia”
CARSON CITY, NEVADA-The Carson City Library, Carson City Literacy Volunteers, and Literacy Volunteers for Children, will present a documentary film by Luis Macias, “Embracing Dyslexia”, on Monday, November 4th, at 6:00 pm, at the BRIC (Business Resource Innovation Center). The BRIC is located at 108 East Proctor Street, downtown Carson City.
This helpful and compelling documentary explores dyslexia from a variety of perspectives, including interviews with parents, adult dyslexics, researchers, educators and experts. Dyslexia affects between 15-20% of the population and Jan Whitemore, Executive Director for Carson City Literacy Volunteers, has dedicated herself to ensuring that percentage drops in Carson City. Whitemore stated, “There are so many children and adults struggling. Dyslexia might be the reason a bright child is struggling in school, dislikes school and has homework battles every night. Reading is hard, spelling is worse and organizing thoughts on paper is nearly impossible.” This film will define what dyslexia is and why early screening is vital. In addition, experts will share how effective tutoring, classroom accommodations and recognizing a child’s abilities will help foster success.
The Business Resource Innovation Center (BRIC) is affiliated with “Your Knowledge and Discovery Place”, the Carson City Library. The BRIC is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is located at 108 E Proctor Street, phone 775 283-7123.
