Carson City schools compete in Trick or Treat Food Drive to help families in need
The Trick or Treat Food Drive has returned and at least nine schools in the Carson City are participating to compete and to collect the most non-perishable food items to win the 'Phil the FISH' trophy and a pizza party.
Taking place from Monday, Oct. 16-31, students are encouraged to bring in canned goods and non-perishable foods each day to gain greater awareness of food insecurities in our Carson City community and help aid families in need this winter season.
All food items will be stored in the FISH (Friends in Service Helping) Food Bank in Carson City and provided to individuals and families as needed throughout the holidays.
With this food drive, organizers from FISH have two goals. Collect over 50,000 cans of food to support the ever-increasing demand for food, especially during the upcoming winter months when the need is more evident. And to encourage children to be good citizens by increasing their awareness and participation in supporting those who are less fortunate in our community.
The following schools are currently participating:
Bethlehem Lutheran
Bordewich Elementary
Carson Middle
Eagle Valley Middle
Empire Elementary
Fremont Elementary
Fritsch Elementary
Mark Twain Elementary
Seeliger Elementary School
Is your student attending either of these schools? If so, we encourage all families and caretakers to take part in this year's food drive and help each student make a great impact. Here are some TIPS to keep in mind:
1. This is a “can” food drive so our primary goal is to collect cans of food. We are also including bottles of water. (2 bottles of water = 1 can)
2. Items should count as they are sold. A case of 24 cans (each able to be sold separately) should count as 24 cans. An individual packet of oatmeal unboxed from its original box does not count as 1. For Top Ramen only, please count 6 packages as 1 can.
3. We can also collect cash or check donations in lieu of food. For each dollar collected, the student will receive credit for 2 cans of food.
Our goal is to feed the hungry and we would like to maintain a fair and fun contest for all the students and classes involved.

If you'd like to drop off food directly to the FISH Food Bank, hours of operation are: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
