Carson City Host Lions Club celebrates 90th anniversary; past international director will be guest speaker
The Carson City Host Lions Club will celebrate the 90th anniversary of its founding on Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino with a Gala and banquet. Special guest speaker, Past International Director George L. “Mick” Barrus, will address the group.
Past Director Barrus of Cody, Wyoming served a two-year term as a director of the International Association of Lions Clubs after his election at the association’s 68th annual convention, held in Dallas, Texas, USA, June 19-22, 1985.
A Lion since 1965 and a member of the Cody Lions Club, Past Director Barrus has served the association in a number of positions, including district governor, club president, zone chair and chairperson of the Albuquerque, New Mexico USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum in 1989.
Active and involved in his community, Past Director Barrus has been elected town councilperson, hospital trustee and mayor. He also served as a municipal judge. Past Director Barrus is also the recipient of three international education awards, each given for teaching excellence.
Back on October 19, 1932, the Carson City Daily Appeal reported that twenty-two charter members organized the Carson City Lions Club and that Damon Carr was elected the first president. The Appeal reported that “The formation of a Lions Club in this city is a promotion of a service club that will do a lot of good.”
The Lions have continued to “do a lot of good” in this community for 90 years by fulfilling community vision, hearing, environment, youth, and other charitable needs. The Carson City Host Lions are particularly proud to annually provide about 70 people with eye exams and eyeglasses who could not otherwise afford them.
Well-known fundraisers that provide the means to help the community include the Crab Feed, selling See’s Candies at Christmas, White Cane Days, and selling Nevada Day Buttons during the Nevada Day Parade.
