Carson Girls Overtake Manogue On The Pitch
The Carson Senators girl's soccer team met the Manogue Miners on the pitch Tuesday at Carson High School. The Senators needed the win badly after losing a league match against Galena last Saturday.
The soccer matchup was physical throughout and in just the fourth minute you could see it starting to unfold when Manogue got booked with a yellow.
In the ninth minute Carson would take the first shot, but was too lengthy and made for an easy save for the Manogue keeper. In the 17th minute Manogue got booked with another yellow after a collision between one of their forwards and Carson's goalie.
Within the next two minutes following the yellow Carson got two good looks on goal, but only one was on target and turned into another easy save for Manogue's goalie. In the 27th minute, Manogue put together a promising set piece off a corner that ended up being headed into the goal post before it was finally cleared by the Carson squad.
Finally in the 33rd minute, Isabella Wakeling of Carson found the back of the next with an assist going to Lindsay Hettrick. Carson would strike again in the 40th minute right before the half time whistle blew.
Into the second half and it was Manogue who strung together some good attacks in the 43rd and 52nd minutes, but both couldn't seem to make their way into the net. Finally Manogue would get the goal they had so been longing for in the 62 minute off a free kick that was rocketed from about 35 yards out. The score would finish at 2-1, but both sides got some promising looks at goal before the final whistle blew.
I asked head coach Greg Lehman what the key to getting the win was and he replied with, "The girls have been practicing really well and Manogue had a lot of speed, but we were able to move the ball around, get out our chances and wither theirs."
The Senators next match up is this Friday against a very strong looking Douglas team.
"They've had a good season," Lehman commented, "It will be a good challenge for us to see where we're at." That game will be at Douglas with a start time of 3 p.m.
