SLHS Alumni is Named an NCAA, NJCAA National Athlete of the Week
Nathanael Williams, Colorado Mines Junior and former Sierra Lutheran High School Falcon, has been named the NCAA Division II National Athlete of the Week (Week of September 21, 2015). In addition, he was also named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week (Week of September 21, 2015), and the Colorado Mines’ Athlete of the Month for the month of September.
According to USTFCCCA.org, the NCAA & NJCAA “National Athlete of the Week is an award selected and presented by the USTFCCCA Communications Staff at the beginning of each week to six collegiate cross country athletes (male and female for each of the three NCAA divisions).”
“Nominations are open to the public. The award seeks to highlight not only the very best times, marks and scores on a week-to-week basis, but also performances that were significant on the national landscape and/or the latest in a series of strong outings. Quality of competition, suspenseful finishes and other factors will also play a role in the decision” (Kyle Terwillegar, USTFCCCA.org).
As of September 30th, Week 3 of the season, Colorado Mines is ranked #4 in the NCAA Division II Men’s Cross Country National Coaches’ Poll.
Williams attended Sierra Lutheran High School from 2008-2012, competing in Cross-Country and Track all four years. Under the direction of former Head Coach Dave Marson and Assistant Steve Kubel (now the SLHS Cross-Country Head Coach), Williams traveled to State competitions all four years he attended Sierra Lutheran.
Terwillegar, on USTFCCCA.org, reports that “Williams won the 8K race at Colorado College (on September 19th, 2015) in 24:48, topping multiple-time All-American teammate Marty Andrie by six seconds and CSU-Pueblo’s Derrick Williams by a whopping 42 seconds.”
