Children's Museum in Carson City to close Sept. 30 to Oct. 13 for construction
The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada will be closed from September 30th through October 13th and will re-open on October 14th. The facility is getting a front of the museum upgrade with new pavers, picnic tables, and benches.
The museum will also be getting some much needed interior touch up paint and exhibit upgrades. These improvements are the courtesy of Carson City and the Redevelopment Authority.
The mission of the organization is to maintain a play-based learning environment that is dedicated to adventures in the arts, sciences, and humanities to children and families from diverse backgrounds from the Northern Nevada region.
The Children’s Museum was incorporated as a private, non-profit educational institution in 1988. It opened with limited space in the Nevada State Museum in 1991. It then moved in 1994 to the restored Carson City Civic Auditorium with 30 hands-on exhibits, 4,000 square feet of exhibit space plus stage and foyer for admission desk, gift shop, and restrooms.
A lower level remodel occurred in 2000 which added kitchen space, class and meeting rooms, a workshop and storage areas. In 2010, another remodel updated the lobby to include Nevada State history exhibits and opened the stage area to include problem solving activities. In 2013, the STEM room became operational with exhibits for children 2-8 featuring an aquarium, greenhouse, models of the human body and a virtual computer-generated animal dissection station.
