Phyllis Anker Bendure March 7, 1919 - August 11, 2017
Phyllis Lorraine Anker Bendure, 98, passed away peacefully early Friday morning on August 11th. She was born in Reno, Nevada on March 7, 1919, a third generation Nevadan whose grandparents emigrated to Lovelock from Denmark and established Anker Ranch in 1877. That ranch is still in the family today.
As a member of the Pershing County High School class of 1937, she was an accomplished pianist and earned her University of Nevada tuition by playing piano gigs, tutoring, and summer jobs on campus. She received both her Bachelors and Master’s degrees in Education from the University of Nevada, Reno.
Phyllis enlisted in the US Army Women’s Army Corps, WAC, in June 1943 and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. In early 1944 she was assigned to Chief of Staff General George Marshall’s office at the Pentagon. Being fluent in French, Phyllis accompanied General Marshall to the 1944 Roosevelt/Churchill Conference in Quebec. She was discharged on February 18, 1946, returned to Lovelock and married Ted Bendure in May 1946.
They had three children, Ted (Susann) Bendure, Fred (Judy) Bendure and Sue Bendure Henderson; 6 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. In her personal life, Phyllis was a teacher for over 40 years mainly in Lovelock and Carson City. Her subjects included accounting, shorthand, typing and music. Phyllis was a 70 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Daughters of the Nile and a founding member of Carson’s Delta Kappa Gamma chapter. She loved working on the ranch and in her yard, scrapbooking, music, cutting special articles from the various newspapers, photography and her family and friends.
Her Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 26th at the First United Methodist Church in Carson City, with burial at 10:00 am on Thursday, August 24th at the Big Meadow Cemetery in Lovelock. Memories and comments can be shared in her guest book at www.fitzhenrysfuneralhome.net. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First United Methodist Church, Carson City, NV.
