Healthy Communities meeting Thursday addresses COVID, eviction and Head Start

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey counties hosts its August meeting this Thursday, August 12, 2021 at 9 a.m. via Zoom. The public meeting includes member updates and introductions, discussion of matters of regional importance to health and wellness, plus presentations by guest speakers.

Special presentations this month will address COVID-19, new developments regarding eviction in Nevada, and the Head Start Program of Centro de la Familia’s Yerington Center.

Centro De La Familia
Liza Arias, Family Services Specialist with Centro de la Familia’s Yerington Center, will describe Centro’s Head Start Program.

Centro de la Familia is a nonprofit agency dedicated to empowering parents throughout the states of Utah, Colorado, and Nevada to be invested in their children’s education. Centro works with all kinds of families, many in rural and difficult situations, to help them access resources that will vastly improve outcomes for their children.

Working with children and families since 1975, Centro has excelled at managing early outreach and educational programs among under-served communities.

Nevada Legal Services
David Scheatzle, an attorney with Nevada Legal Services, will describe some of the free services of the non-profit organization providing civil legal aid to low income Nevadans in all counties. Their Pro Bono attorneys offer education on legal issues around housing and eviction, criminal record sealing, estate planning, Indian Legal Issues, immigration, employment, etc.

NLS’s education on legal issues such as housing and eviction is particularly timely, because the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued a new eviction moratorium this month when the previous CDC moratorium expired. The moratorium is effective immediately and runs through October 3, 2021.

In addition, locally run programs are funneling American Rescue Plan federal dollars to tenants and landlords in need of emergency rental assistance to help cover rent, utilities, and other housing costs. New federal rental assistance is intended to reach renters behind on housing costs, as well as landlords who have faced challenges during the pandemic. NLS educational outreach can help renters and landlords learn how to access the relief available to them.

Dr. Jennifer Minor
Doctor Jennifer Minor will describe what she learned during her critical care fellowship in Las Vegas County Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit during the COVID-19 pandemic. She is up to date on the most recent data and information regarding variants of concern, vaccinations, masking and risks of covid disease. Dr. Minor is passionate about medical education and health, especially that of rural Nevadans.

Dr. Minor is a rural Nevadan who grew up on a cattle ranch in Dayton and was the 2008 valedictorian of Dayton High School. She has a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience (Cum Laude) from University of Nevada Reno, and a 2016 medical degree from the UNR School of Medicine. She completed an Internal Medicine residency at Kaiser Santa Clara Medical Center in 2019, and continued education with a Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Las Vegas in 2021.

During the last year and a half of her critical care fellowship in Las Vegas County hospital ICU, Dr. Minor noted that Covid was a “huge cause of death and debility of those she cared for.”

She will next be at Renown Hospital as an Intensivist, a specialist who works in the intensive care unit.
