Coach Bendure receives Baseball Coaching Honor

American Family Insurance All-USA Nevada Baseball Team has announced that Fred Bendure, Virginia City High School Baseball Coach has been chosen as Nevada’s High School Baseball Coach of the Year. It recognizes Coach Bendure for guiding the Mucker's to the Division IV State Baseball Title.

The Virginia City High School baseball team won the Division IV Regional tournament on May 17, 2014 and was victorious in winning the Division IV State Baseball Championship on May 24, 2014. The Virginia City Team went undefeated in both Championships. This was the first time they won this title in 15 years.

Also of interest is the fact that Fred Bendure is a native Nevadan, a Carson High School former Baseball player and a graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno, were he played baseball for UNR under Coach Jackie Jensen, Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame Player.

Coach Bendure is a long time local resident of Carson City. This was his first year as Coach of the Virginia City High School Baseball Team “Muckers”. He coached baseball previously at Carson, Douglas and Dayton high schools.

Since April 15, 2024 the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office has been investigating the disappearance of 25-year-old Sara Fliliatraut. The investigation led to the discovery of Ms. Filiatraut’s remains in a remote area of Churchill County on May 22, 2024. An autopsy performed by the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Ms. Filiatraut’s death as a homicide.

The annual Genoa Lakes Ladies’ Golf Club President’s Cup tournament took place July 16 and July 18 at the Genoa Lakes Golf Club Ranch and Lakes Courses. Thirty members competed in the two-day, net tournament. Terri Ianiro was the winner, with a net score of 133. Kory Miller was the runner-up, with a score of 134.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Army National Guard joined the fight to halt the progression of western wildfires in California on Monday.

UPDATE: A 20-year-old Kentucky man, Owen Joseph McDonough, was positively identified as the drowning victim rescued from rough waters at Whale Beach located along the east shore of Lake Tahoe.

The family of the Villa Hills victim have been notified by the Carson City Sheriff's Office Coroner’s Division. McDonough was described by the family as an intermediate skilled swimmer.

On Sunday, July 28, 2024 at approximately 7:55 p.m. the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Communication Center received a call for service stating a male suspect was driving erratically, failed to stop at multiple stop signs and almost struck pedestrians and other vehicles.
