Stronger Than Ever: Reno Chamber Orchestra Emerges from COVID with New Conductor
Today, the Reno Chamber Orchestra announces the selection of their new Music Director. Maestro Kelly Kuo will lead the orchestra from the podium and behind the scenes, conducting concerts, choosing musical programming, and guiding the artistic direction of the orchestra. Maestro Kuo will be only the third individual to hold this esteemed position since the Reno Chamber Orchestra’s founding in 1974.
The Reno Chamber Orchestra (RCO) received applications from over 140 music director candidates, which were narrowed down to six finalists. The first candidate appeared in March 2019, long before anyone could imagine a global pandemic postponing events and drawing out the selection process.
Maestro Kelly Kuo’s original and rescheduled dates with the RCO were postponed by the coronavirus pandemic, but the third time proved to be the charm, with event restrictions lifting just in time for Kuo, the musicians, and audience to safely gather. Kuo inspired audiences and musicians alike with his technical skill and versatile programming, and appeared with the RCO in May 2021 to conduct a program including Tan Dun’s Crouching Tiger Concerto and Louise Farrenc’s lush Third Symphony.
“The community saw six dynamic conductors with incredible skills, and in the end we are excited to welcome Kelly Kuo as our new leader,” says Search Committee chair and RCO principal bassist, Scott Faulkner. “This is a great time for the RCO, welcoming our new conductor as we move out of the pandemic and approach our 50th anniversary season in 2024,” adds RCO Board President John Tozzi.
“It is a great privilege to join the Reno Chamber Orchestra family as its next Music Director,” Kuo shares. “I am so impressed with the flexibility and generosity of spirit demonstrated by the musicians and community. It was obvious to me during my visit that they care enormously about the RCO and are committed to further developing a meaningful musical connection to the diverse people and cultures that make up the Reno community. I look forward to continuing our journey together.”
Maestro Kelly Kuo’s artistic leadership will guide the RCO into a new chapter of excellence in chamber music and chamber orchestra performances. Kuo will lead the RCO for its opening program October 16 and 17, 2021 as well as other appearances in Reno during the season. He begins work planning the 2022-23 season as the world of live performing arts continues to emerge from pandemic restrictions.
