Carson City Sheriff to speak at Monday's Democratic tele-luncheon
Monday's Democratic tele-luncheon will feature a town hall-style presentation by Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.
Last month he wrote a guest commentary for the Nevada Appeal in which he said, "The Sheriff ’s Office remains intent on engaging in community activities, and hosting those that allow effective communications between our residents and law enforcement." I wrote him saying, "In that spirit, could I talk you into speaking via Zoom at our July 13th Democratic tele-luncheon?" True to his word he jumped right on it, and Monday we get to hear what he has to say.
By the same token, the sheriff will get to hear what local citizens have to say, so everyone is encouraged to bring questions and comments. It's safe to say he won't be gung ho for defunding the Sheriff's Department, but with pandemic budget cuts right around the corner, it's hard to say for sure what might end up on the chopping block, so the defunding topic is fair game. Like it or not, more than one thing is about to be defunded.
Sheriff Furlong last spoke at the August 27, 2018 Democratic luncheon, at that time in favor of Question 1, the controversial "Marcy's Law" victim's right's initiative. It was opposed by the ACLU because of potential conflicts with the due process rights of the accused. The measure passed 61% to 39%, so the sheriff can give us an update about the current status of that constitutional amendment.
Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, this event is scheduled for noon on Monday, July 13, and will be held online via Zoom teleconference due to the temporary shutdown of in-person venues. Those wishing to be on distribution for a link to the teleconference can email Rich Dunn, Men's Committee Events Coordinator, at richdunn@aol.com.
