Mayoral candidate to speak at Monday's Democratic luncheon
The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Devan Doan, one of five primary candidates for Mayor of Carson City. Since graduating from UNR in 2014, Devan has made his mark in the renewable energy industry. Early voting for the June 11 primary starts on May 25th and will run through Friday, June 7th. The primary's top two will go on to the November 5th general election.
On his website, www.devandoan.com, Devan has the following to say about himself and his campaign:
As a passionate advocate for the people of Carson City, I am honored to be running for Mayor to serve our community. With a rich background in renewable energy, a commitment to public service, and a deep love for our city and its residents, I bring a unique blend of experience and dedication to this campaign.
My journey has been fueled by a passion for technology, and a desire to make a positive impact on the environment. Since the age of 6, I have been fascinated by computers, and by the 6th grade, I was already building them. This early interest in technology laid the foundation for a career focused on innovation and sustainability.
After graduating from the University of Nevada, Reno with an undergraduate degree in Political Science in 2014, I returned to North Las Vegas to care for my grandparents, who raised me. During this time, I built a successful career in the renewable energy industry, working for leading companies such as SolarCity, Sunrun, Tesla, Det Norske Veritas, and NV Energy.
In my role, I specialized in obtaining incentive funding for large-scale commercial and multi-family housing projects, focusing on installing solar and/or battery storage systems. Through strategic collaboration with major stakeholders, I facilitated pioneering construction projects on existing affordable housing developments.
One of my proudest achievements was when I secured over $22 million of funding to install solar/battery systems on low-income housing units, mitigating mandatory power outages performed by utilities for wildfire prevention. This initiative not only enhanced the resilience of the communities, but also provided much-needed relief to vulnerable residents.
After the successful career detailed above I decided to take a sabbatical to focus on preparing my house to be rented. During this time I also decided to integrate a solar/battery system into my pickup truck as a proof of concept. My heart longed to move back to Northern Nevada, and that opportunity arose during the 2022 midterm elections where I took on a role with the Nevada State Democratic Party organizing all of Nevada's rural counties. It was this experience that convinced me that the "team sports" mentality overtaking party politics is the root cause of much of the political dysfunction I have witnessed my whole life. After this experience I started my own small business using the technical skills acquired earlier in my career, and moved to Carson City to help a friend restore their historic home built in 1906.
As your Mayor, I am committed to leveraging my experience in renewable energy and sustainable development to build a more resilient, prosperous, and inclusive Carson City. I believe in the power of innovation, collaboration, and community engagement to address our most pressing challenges, and seize new opportunities for growth and progress.
This event is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Monday, April 15th. It can be attended either in person at Black Bear Diner, inside Max Casino, or online via Zoom. Devan Doan's presentation will begin after all the lunch orders have been taken, around 1:30. Those wishing to be on distribution for luncheon Zoom links should contact Rich Dunn at richdunn@aol.com.
