Capital City Community Band features 'Salute To Young Musicians' on March 26
The Capital City Community Band will present its annual “Salute To Young Musicians” concert on Sunday, March 26, 2023, at 2 p.m. in the Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center.
The concert will feature Jake Xie performing Fantasia for Alto Saxophone, the Carson High School Winter Drum Line, the Carson High School Clarinet Choir, Brass Quintet and Bassoonist Alex Garcia Perez. The recipient of the Capital City Community Band Richard Doede Music Scholarship will also be announced at the concert.
The concert is free and open to all members of our community and surrounding areas.
Jake Xie, one of the featured soloists for this concert, is a senior at Carson High School. He began playing alto saxophone in the fifth grade. As he continued through school bands he has been selected for the Northern Zone Honor band from middle school through high school and has been selected as lead alto sax in the Nevada All-state Jazz band for 3 consecutive years. Jake plans to major in computer science and is patiently awaiting a decision from Stanford. He also plans to minor in music and, more importantly, hopes to keep playing for the rest of his life.
Our other soloist is CHS senior, Alex Garcia Perez. He, too, started his band education on Alto Saxophone but he found the low, rich sound of the Bassoon very enticing. He began studying the bassoon in the eighth grade. After a year of lots and lots of practice, he was selected to perform with the CHS Wind Ensemble. He is also very active in Drum Corps and will be performing with the Seattle Cascades this summer. Alex plans to attend UNR and major in Anthropology and minor in Music. He plans to always have music in his life.
The Capital City Community Band was founded in 1978 by Richard Doede as a venue for adults who played in high school and college but had discontinued due to work and family obligations.
The band started with 15 members but within a few years had grown to fifty members. In 1988 the band represented the U.S. at Expo 88 in Australia and traveled to Switzerland in 1995. Richard Doede retired in 2018 and the current director, Nick Jacques, took over the baton to continue this community tradition. The band never charges for concerts and relies on donations to pay for the use of the community center and to purchase music and equipment.
Unfortunately, it costs to provide free entertainment.
As a music educator, Richard Doede started the “Salute To Young Musicians” concert in 1982 to show young musicians they could always have music in their life, no matter their career choice. “Without young people involved in music, our community groups would cease to exist. This is our way of honoring those students who enjoy making music and to show them music can always be a part of their life no matter what career path they choose,” explained Nick Jacques, conductor of the band. “March is ‘Music In Our Schools’ month, which celebrates the important role of music education. Music must always be a part of every student’s life.”
The band will perform a variety of music including Selections from “Cats” and “American Overture”.
Come and join the band in celebrating 45 years of sharing music with our community and enjoy the music of the next generation of Carson City musicians. The concert is FREE but donations are happily accepted.
